There never was a finer county, declared Charles II, and we like to think we have a special corner of that county which we are very pleased to share with you..

Woodland Flora

As you meander along the flower-banked lanes of rural West Dorset, a mile from the coast you turn into an unmarked lane 800ft above sea level. The views are wonderful, look out over Chesil beach and the unique West Dorset coastline, east towards Weymouth and Portland where on a clear day you can see the Bill, or west where you can see Golden Cap, the highest cliff in Dorset, and beyond to Lyme Regis. Continue on for about a mile and look out for birds, wildlife and wildflowers in the woods and on the grass verges. Nature-lovers will marvel at the richness of this unspoilt area. This is where you will find Gorwell Farm, nestled in its own secluded valley.

View towards Chesil Beach from Gorwell FarmGorwell is situated two miles from Chesil Beach, and only 1.5 miles from the historical village of Abbotsbury, famous for its Swannery, Tithe Barn and Sub-Tropical gardens. We are nine miles from three local centres: Dorset's county town, Dorchester, famous for its Thomas Hardy connections, Judge Jeffries, the Tolpuddle Martyrs and the Iron Age hillfort of Maiden Castle. Weymouth, an archetypal Edwardian seaside town with an expanse of seafront, a wonderful sandy beach and safe, shallow water in the bay. Bridport, a market town famous for its fishing and harbour at West Bay, the home of ‘Harbour Lights’. We are only half an hour from Lyme Regis with its world famous Cobb and Sherborne, famous for its Abbey and castles. Also within easy reach is Wimborne and its craft markets and antiques. Further afield, and worth a visit are Poole, interesting for its famous pottery, harbour and Brownsea Island, and Bournemouth, with its shopping, clubs and theatres.

View of Chapel Gate leading towards St Catherines ChapelThere is something for everyone in West Dorset. The interesting coastline, the pretty villages, the abundance of water sports and other sporting activities: horse riding, golf, mountain biking, sailing, scuba diving, windsurfing, canoeing, fossil hunting, and fishing. Not to mention the wonderful network of footpaths, including the South West Coastal path and MacMillan way, which both cross our farm.

Horse riding is offered in the local village and surrounding area, bikes may be hired locally, several golf courses are all within nine miles. Sea, coarse and trout fishing are available locally. For riders with your own horses, bring your horse to ride the fantastic network of bridleways in this part of West Dorset. Grazing is available as is parking for horseboxes.
